SHILLONG, Sep 23: Former minister Ampareen Lyngdoh has urged the young graduates of the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) to return to their hometowns and contribute towards building their communities, rather than viewing their degrees merely as a ticket to city-based jobs.
She reminded the outgoing students of the graduation pledge instituted by her late brother, former MLCU Vice Chancellor RG Lyngdoh, which emphasises that education carries a responsibility beyond personal gain.
“Until we bridge these gaps, our country cannot progress. The statistics of children in school or education indicators are meaningless unless every privileged graduate uses their knowledge and opportunity to make a tangible difference in society,” she said.
She also lauded the university for initiating the RG Lyngdoh Memorial Fund with an investment of ₹50 lakh, describing it as “remarkable” since it was set up without contributions from the family. “I am deeply moved by this celebration and the commitment to my brother’s vision,” Lyngdoh added.
Earlier, the ceremony began with a heartfelt address from Chancellor Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor, who celebrated the university’s growth and achievements.
During his speech, he unveiled a portrait and presented citations of the RG Lyngdoh, which were received by Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Additionally, the RG Lyngdoh Memorial Fund was announced with a Committee to be chaired by Patricia Mukhim, who is the board member of MLCU.
The convocation witnessed 1,005 graduates, including 37 PhD recipients, marking a milestone in MLCU’s academic and research growth.
A highlight of the event was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the National Lutheran Health and Medical Board (NLHMB) to Dr Ramesh C Deka, former Director of AIIMS, New Delhi.
Deka, known for his pioneering research and service to marginalised communities, described the honour as one he would cherish above all others. He vowed to continue his dedication to advancing health education and supporting underserved communities.
During the programme, graduate representatives Vania C Shadap and Walunir Jamir shared their perspectives, expressing their gratitude and aspirations on behalf of their peers.
The event concluded with the MLCU anthem, which was then followed by the annual Aurora Borealis music festival featuring Brothers in Jam, KROOZE and Da-La-Riti.
