CEM election: KHADC Opp yet to nominate candidate

Shillong, Sep 28: The opposition alliance in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) — Synrop Liang Iatei (constructive alliance) is yet to nominate a candidate for the election of the Chief Executive Member (CEM).
“We will be taking a decision during the alliance meeting on Monday. We will assess whether we have the numbers,” KHADC Leader of Opposition, Titosstarwell Chyne said on Sunday.
The special session of the Council to elect a new CEM, following the resignation of Shemborlang Rynjah, will be held at 11 am on Tuesday.
According to a notification issued by KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana, intending candidates must file their nomination papers with the Secretary of the Legislative Wing by 12 noon on Monday. Scrutiny of the papers will take place the same day at 12:15 pm.
Governor CH Vijayashankar has accepted Rynjah’s resignation and has authorised him to continue discharging the duties of the Executive Committee.
In the 30-member KHADC, the VPP enjoys a clear majority with 18 members, including one nominated MDC.
The Opposition alliance has 12 members — five from the NPP, five from the UDP, one from the HSPDP, and one Independent.
