SHILLONG: The Social and Human Resource Development department of the KJP Synod Assembly will be formally taking over the control of the conference hall building of the Church at IGP from the Martin Luther Christian University on Wednesday.
The MLCU had been using the conference hall building as its main office ever since it started its operations in the State in 2005.
The KJP Assembly had allowed the MLCU to make use of the building since it had entered into a partnership to run the University.
Sources from the KJP Synod on Tuesday said that the Church has decided to take back its property after withdrawing its relationship with the University during a Special Session of the Church in April 2012.
“The Church unanimously took this decision after deliberations on the report of the special committee with regards to the functioning of the MLCU which lasted for more than five hours. Everyone felt that it would be better for the Church to end its relations with the University,” the sources said, adding that the KJP Synod was unhappy with the lack of transparency in the functioning of the University since 2010.
“The matter was also discussed during the biennial session of the KJP Assembly held ) at Mawtawar in April 2011,” the sources said.
Sources informed that the Church had waited for nearly two years for the University to vacate the building. “In fact, it was the University authorities who had requested the KJP Synod to give them time till of April 15 to vacate the building,” the sources said.
The sources also informed that the KJP Synod had written to the State Government to bring an amendment to the Act of the University by deleting the name of the Church.
“The Church is surprised to see that the Government is yet to comply with their request to bring an amendment to the Act of the University,” the sources said.
Attempts to contact MLCU Vice-Chancellor RG Lyngdoh failed since his mobile was switched off.
It may be mentioned that MLCU, which is sponsored by the National Lutheran Health and Medical Board of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of India, was set up by an Act of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2005.
