MUMBAI, Oct 7: Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty extended their winning streak for the fourth consecutive session on Tuesday, buoyed by gains in blue-chip banking stocks and sustained buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs).
The BSE Sensex rose 136.63 points (0.17%) to close at 81,926.75 after a volatile session that saw it surge over 500 points to an intraday high of 82,309.56 before retreating due to profit booking.
The NSE Nifty gained 30.65 points (0.12%) to settle at 25,108.30.
Major gainers on the Sensex included Bharti Airtel, HCL Tech, UltraTech Cement, Power Grid, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, and ICICI Bank. On the other hand, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, Trent, and Infosys were among the top laggards.
Vinod Nair of Geojit Financial Services noted that early gains were supported by positive global cues and anticipation around the earnings season, though modest Q2 FY26 expectations led to flattish closing.
He added that investor focus is shifting to Q3 corporate commentary, especially on signs of recovery.
Sectorally, performance was mixed.
Telecom stocks led gains (up 2.13%), followed by realty, energy, consumer durables, financial services, and tech. In contrast, FMCG, commodities, IT, bankex, metal, and services indices ended in the red.
The BSE midcap index rose 0.45%, while the smallcap index slipped 0.15%.
Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking observed that the market paused after a recent sharp rebound, with traders reacting to a mixed sectoral trend on weekly expiry day.
Over the last four sessions, the Sensex has jumped 1,659.13 points (2.06%) and the Nifty by 497.2 points (2.02%).
Globally, Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed higher, while markets in China and South Korea remained shut for a holiday.
European markets traded mixed, and US markets ended mostly higher. Brent crude edged down 0.15% to $65.37 a barrel.
On the institutional front, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹313.77 crore, while DIIs made substantial purchases of ₹5,036.39 crore on Monday. (PTI)
