JOWAI, Oct 8: A group of village elders from Hingaria and Huroi border villages under Elaka Rymbai, near the Bangladesh border, called on the officials at the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) office on Wednesday, seeking clarification on the Council’s delay in processing land registration forms.
The delegation, comprising Marshall S B Biam, Thepmon Khonglah, Ephesos Talang and Poly Pohlong, submitted a letter to JHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Thombor Shiwat, and questioned why the office had refused to accept application forms for Land Holding Certificates submitted by residents.
According to the letter, the JHADC office insists that applicants must obtain approval from the Doloi of Elaka Rymbai. However, the post of Doloi is currently vacant, as the Meghalaya High Court has yet to permit the appointment of a new Doloi due to an ongoing legal case.
The leaders pointed out that, in the absence of a Doloi, the responsibility was temporarily handed over to the Acting Officer (AO) of the District Council, but the office has not acted on the matter. They questioned why the Council had initially asked villagers to submit applications if approvals could not be processed without a Doloi.
The group urged the CEM and the Executive Member in charge of Elaka Rymbai to provide a clear explanation to ensure villagers can secure their land rights and support local development initiatives.
