ISSF World C’ships: Bhavtegh stays in contention for finals berth
Athens, Oct 11: India’s Bhavtegh Singh Gill remained in contention for a finals berth at the ISSF World Championship for Shotgun after completing the second day of men’s skeet qualification with a total of 97 hits here on Saturday. Bhavtegh followed up his perfect opening day with rounds of 24 and 23 to stay well within striking distance of the top six at the Malakasa Shooting Range. Three-time world champion Vincent Hancock of the United States, and world No.4 Jakub Tomecek of Czech Republic, currently share the lead with 99 hits. A tightly packed leaderboard sees 10 shooters tied for second on 98, while Bhavtegh sits just one hit behind Sweden’s Henrik Jansson, USA’s Christian Elliott, and seven others on 97. (PTI)
Inaugural Shooting League of India moved to early next year
Mumbai, Oct 11: The inaugural Shooting League of India has been rescheduled to early next year with National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), saying the decision has been taken to ensure it suits the athletes, prospective franchises, broadcast partners and it is in sync with the ISSF calendar. The franchise-based Shooting League of India (SLI), which was scheduled from November 20 till December 2 this year, will now take place in early 2026 but no specific date has been given by the NRAI. Early this year, NRAI had said the League, which is expected to have 6-8 franchise-based teams, had attracted over 400 athletes from more than 20 countries, including the USA, Germany, Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, and Australia. Parthsarthi, Tavish clinch U-16 titles at Fenesta Open
New Delhi, Oct 11: Top seed Parthsarthi Mundhe and eighth seed Tavish Pahwa emerged as champions in the girls and boys U-16 categories respectively at the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship here Saturday. In the girls’ U-16 singles final, Parthsarthi was made to fight hard before defeating Shreeniti Chowdhury 6-0 3-6 6-4 in an intense three-setter. Meanwhile, in the boys’ U-16 singles final, Tavish produced a composed performance to beat Mannan Ashok Agarwal 6-2 6-3 in straight sets. Jensi Kanabar stunned top seed Padma Priya Rameshkumar 6-2, 6-2 to lift the girls’ U-14 singles title. In the boys’ U-14 singles final, Harsh Marwaha produced another upset, defeating fifth seed Aarav Mulay by 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. Earlier, Tavish and Prakaash Sarran defeated Mannan Ashok Agarwal and Om Ramesh Patel (Seed 3) 1-6, 7-5, 10-6 in a thrilling boys’ U-16 doubles final. In the girls’ U-16 doubles final, Parthsarthi and Akansha Ghosh overcame Sanmitha Harini Lokesh and Deepshika Vinay Agamurthy 6-2, 7-6 in straight sets. In the boys’ U-14 doubles final, Kaustubh Singh and Vivaan Mirdha defeated Rhunmaan Mahesh and Arjun Manikandan 7-6, 6-1 to claim the title. The girls U-14 Doubles final saw Padma Priya Rameshkumar and Shazfa SK beating Aniha Gavinolla and Zoha Qureshi 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets. (PTI)
Parth, Himanshu win at National Junior Athletics Championships
Bhubaneswar, Oct 11: Jharkhand’s 100m champion in U-20 men’s group, Parth Singh, continued his good run in the National Junior Athletics Championships to win gold in long jump event with a distance of 7.82m, a personal best and meet record, here on Saturday. The previous meet record of 7.79m was in the name of S Lokesh set in 2019. He was among several competitors to have achieved the World U-20 qualification mark on day two of the competition. The qualification mark in long jump is 7.58m. Haryana’s Asian youth champion Himanshu crossed the 80m mark on his way to winning gold in boys U-18 javelin throw. His best throw on Saturday was 80.38m. (PTI)
