SHILLONG, Oct 11: Expressing deep anguish over the recent tragic incidents in Nongrah, a locality of Shillong, and Ri-Bhoi, where young children lost their lives under distressing circumstances, UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh on Saturday urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively so that accountability is ensured, thereby helping restore public trust in the justice system and renew people’s sense of safety and confidence.
Describing the events as “bizarre and unfortunate,” Mawthoh said the community has been left shaken and confused by the recurrence of such shocking cases.
He said the deaths have created widespread fear and raised troubling questions about the state of safety and security, particularly concerning children.
He noted that ordinary citizens are struggling to understand why such incidents continue to occur, and stressed that society must remain alert and united in confronting these threats.
“As concerned citizens, we need to be extra vigilant,” the UDP leader said, adding that the current situation demands a joint response involving families, communities, authorities, and all relevant stakeholders.
He emphasised that collective vigilance and cooperation are essential in times when crimes and other forms of social deviation are on the rise.
Expressing solidarity with the grieving families, Mawthoh called upon all sections of society to work together to safeguard the lives of children and protect communities from further tragedies.
