NONGPOH/SHILLONG, Oct 11: Cracking the case of suspected rape and murder of a minor girl in Ri-Bhoi within 24 hours of the crime being reported, the Ri-Bhoi police on Saturday arrested the main accused, who has reportedly confessed to sexually assaulting the child before murdering her.
The accused has been identified as Iainehskhem Kharsati (22), son of late Rinosha Kharsati, a resident of Ri-Bhoi district.
In an official statement issued on social media, Ri-Bhoi Police said that the investigation is progressing swiftly and a charge sheet will be filed within 14 days after completing all legal formalities. Authorities further assured that efforts are being made to ensure a fast-track trial so that conviction is secured within the next three to four months.
Police also informed that the accused will be listed in the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO).
Expressing condolences, the Ri-Bhoi Police extended sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for strength during this difficult time.
Congress holds prayer
The Congress on Saturday held a prayer session to express grief and concern over the recent murders of children, two in Nongrah locality of Shillong, and another in Ri-Bhoi.
Holding ‘Dongmusa,’ Congress leaders as well as members of civil society highlighted the urgent need for stronger government action to address the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The speakers called upon authorities to ensure justice for the victims and enhance measures to protect children.
Congress leader Manuel Badwar told media persons that the Dongmusa is a symbol of fighting back against evil activities.
The party slammed the recent statement of Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, where he urged parents to take care of their children.
Badwar said the Home Minister does not have the sensitivity to understand that while the wealthy can ensure security for their children, the ordinary people, with bare means of subsistence, cannot afford to have a caretaker round-the-clock for their children.
Stating that children have the right to live, roam and play in their localities, he asked Tynsong to have a re-look at his statement and call meetings to understand the root cause of the problems.
Meghalaya Mahila Congress president Joplyn Scott Shylla echoed a similar view. She slammed the government for failing to provide security to people even after the installation of CCTV cameras and the establishment of the Integrated Command and Control Centre.
She asked the police to pay attention to interior and isolated areas instead of focusing only on the city centres, which remain crowded and where chances of crime are relatively low.
