Students, teachers, and staff currently have to walk about 2.3 km from the main road to reach the college
SHILLONG, Oct 14: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Mawphlang Unit, on Tuesday submitted a petition to Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui seeking his intervention to resolve several problems affecting the newly established Science and Commerce College, Mawphlang.
In the memorandum, the KSU said that the union on September 3 had conducted an inspection of the college and found several shortcomings in the institution, which was only recently inaugurated.
The union urged the Minister to arrange transportation facilities for the college, including buses and vehicles, as students, teachers, and staff currently have to walk about 2.3 km from the main road to reach the college.
The KSU also appealed to ensure the immediate functioning of the laboratory, stating that proper lab facilities are crucial for effective learning in science subjects.
“There is also a need to construct cupboards and to equip the library with sufficient books for the benefit of the students, especially those coming from economically weaker families. Moreover, the students require Wi-Fi access inside the library so that they can conduct research and expand their knowledge in line with the needs of the modern era,” the KSU stated.
The union further urged the Minister to provide boarding facilities within the campus, install drinking water connections, and construct a water storage area to ensure a clean and safe water supply for students and staff.
With regard to faculty and staff, the KSU demanded that the government appoint full fledge qualified teachers and office staff to ensure quality education and smooth functioning of the college.
The KSU also called for the completion of the hostels at the earliest so that students coming from far-flung areas or from financially weaker backgrounds do not face difficulties in finding accommodation or paying rent, as is the case now.
Additionally, the union demanded the improvement of the college playground, including the construction of proper sports facilities such as basketball, football, and volleyball courts, to promote physical education and encourage student participation in sports activities.
