We have received invitation for April 29 meeting, says KSU chief

SHILLONG: Toughening their stand, the 13 pro-ILP pressure groups have decided to put pressure on the State Government to implement ILP to tackle the problem of illegal migration to the state during the crucial meeting to be held on April 29.

“We have received the official communique regarding the April 29 meeting. We would be going to the meeting with a positive mindset of convincing the State Government to implement the ILP,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said here on Saturday.

He said that the pressure groups have compiled various points, to be placed before the Government, on the steps which need to be adopted to implement ILP.

According to the KSU president, the Section 214 of the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873 has clearly mentioned that the Government is free to formulate its own rules to suit the local conditions of the State.

“The States of Mizoram and Arunchal Pradesh have got their own rules to implement ILP. In Meghalaya, Government can come up with its own guidelines which are relevant to address the issue of influx in the State,” Khyriem said.

He informed that the pressure groups would pin point various loopholes in the present law which need to be plugged.

“We would like to have a law which would be able to protect the indigenous population,” KSU president said.
