GUWAHATI, Oct 17: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has sought a transparent investigation into the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore last month.

Gandhi, who paid tributes to the late singer at the cremation site in Sonapur here, and later met his family at their Kahilipara residence on Friday afternoon, addressed mediapersons and said, “We love Zubeen Garg, we want to honour him, but first we want transparency and justice. What happened in Singapore, everybody in Assam should know, and the sooner it happens, the better it is.”.

“The family of Zubeen ji wants the truth to come out. The people of Assam who heard Zubeen Garg, and whose lives he changed, want to know what happened because they want closure (of the case). Therefore, it is the duty of the government to quickly and transparently investigate the incident and tell his family exactly what had happened on that day,” he said.

“It’s very sad for me to come here under these circumstances. I have told the family that I would have liked to visit them under happier conditions,” the Congress leader said, while reaffirming his, and the party’s support, to the family.

Referring to the late singer’s simplicity and humility despite achieving success, Gandhi said, “You can see the worth of a person in their house. Zubeen had wealth, success and humility, something Assam should be extremely proud of.”

Offering condolences to the people of Assam, Gandhi reflected, “You have suffered this cruel blow. You lost someone so dear and important. I stand with you in your grief.”

The Congress leader, who was accompanied by Assam PCC chief Gaurav Gogoi and other senior party leaders, also recalled a mountaineering course he completed in Sikkim and the sights of Mount Kanchenjunga, which he described as honest, transparent, unshakable and beautiful.

“Today, when I was coming (to Guwahati), I was told by Gaurav (Gogoi) that Zubeen ji had said he was like Mount Kanchenjunga. It immediately connected to me that he was Kanchenjunga because he had the qualities of Kanchenjunga,” Gandhi said.
