SHILLONG, Oct 17: Almost three months after around 272 registered hawkers were relocated from the Khyndai Lad stretch to pave way for redevelopment of the area, there is no sign of any beautification work.
Government officials are tight-lipped on the beautification project, leaving citizens to speculate about the fate of the project.
Although the beautification work is yet to start, the condition of Thana Road has worsened dramatically, causing immense hardship for daily commuters. The interlocking tiles, laid earlier, have started to come out leaving the road surface uneven and difficult to negotiate.
Despite being one of the city’s key routes — housing the Congress Bhavan, major hotels, and frequented by top officials — the road has been left neglected by the authorities.
Locals and motorists expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, saying that repeated complaints have gone unheard while the situation continues to deteriorate.
It may be mentioned that soon after the relocation the government had barred the entry of vehicles without passes on the stretch, residents are anxiously waiting for the beautification to start as promised by the government.
