SHILLONG, Oct 18: Rajya Sabha member Dr Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi urged students to adopt a positive mindset and work hard to achieve success in life, citing the rags-to-riches story of the Dhar brothers for inspiration.
Dr Kharlukhi said Ngaitlang Dhar and Sniawbhalang Dhar achieved success from humble beginnings through sheer hard work and determination.
“Everyone talks about the (business) empire created by the Dhar brothers, but no one has ever studied how they built it,” the MP said, mentioning that the elder brother, Ngaitlang Dhar, was once a truck driver.
He advised students to be optimistic and positive. He was speaking at the College of Teacher Education (PGT), Shillong on Friday during the inauguration of a newly constructed additional classroom funded under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme, 2024-2025.
The Dhar brothers are the co-owners of Dhar Brothers Construction Co. Pvt. Ltd, one of the major infrastructure firms engaged in the construction of roads and highways across Meghalaya.
Dr Kharlukhi lauded the College of Teacher Education for its sustained commitment to quality teacher education and contribution to society.
He reminded the gathering that assistance provided under the MPLAD Scheme should be viewed not as generosity but as a public representative’s responsibility toward the educational development of the community.
Emphasising the need for continued institutional growth, he urged the college authorities to approach the Chief Minister and the state government for further support in expanding infrastructure and academic programmes.
“The expansion of such institutions is crucial in meeting emerging academic needs,” he added.
The newly constructed classroom marks a major infrastructure addition, aimed at improving the learning environment for aspiring educators. The event was attended by WL Lyngdoh, president of the College Governing Body; Dr Bahunlang Tron, principal; members of the Governing Body, faculty members, student-teachers and guests.
Dr Kharlukhi unveiled the commemorative plaque and formally inaugurated the new classroom building.
