Assam Police yet to hand over MLP personnel

GUWAHATI/ SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police personnel from the 4th MLP Battalion, Bithar Stone R Marak, who was arrested along with four others on suspicion of being linkmen and arms suppliers to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), is yet to be handed over to the Meghalaya Police.

Benjamin Thabah, Commandant of 4th MLP Battalion, said that there is no intimation from Assam Police on the arrest of Bithar Stone R Marak and they have heard about the involvement of the personnel only from media reports.

Thabah, however, assured that action would be taken against Marak in due course of time.

“In a flock of sheep, there are always white and black sheep,” the police Commandant said.

It may be noted that five people, including Marak, were apprehended along with 130 rounds of live ammunition of AK series assault rifles from near Jorabat along Assam-Meghalaya boundary on Saturday.

Sudhakar Singh, Superintendent of Police (Operation), Assam Police, informed that the apprehended persons were identified as Bikunjoy Longmailai, Horizon Gayari, Tapan Baishya alias Pinku, Bithar Stone R Marak and Joy Sonowal.

The operation was conducted by crime branch of Guwahati city police in coordination with Army intelligence and the CRPF 175 Battalion. A case has been registered in Jorabat police outpost in this regard.
