NONGPOH/TURA, Oct 19: Two motorists have lost their lives in separate incidents of collision in Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills.
One person was killed and another sustained injuries after a truck collided with an auto-rickshaw along National Highway-6 at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, the accident occurred around 3:35 PM when a truck (registration number AS01SC8025) loaded with goods of e-commerce platform Flipkart was travelling from Guwahati towards Shillong.
The vehicle, driven by Nidajan Niang (35) of Shangpung, West Jaintia Hills, reportedly lost control at a sharp curve near the Midway Petrol Pump, allegedly due to overspeeding and negligent driving.
The truck rammed into an auto-rickshaw (ML10D0206) moving in the same direction. The impact caused the rickshaw, driven by Sibu Dey (40) of Tanda, Byrnihat, to crash into a nearby hillock and land in a roadside drain. Dey was found unconscious at the scene and was immediately rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital by an NHAI patrolling team, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The auto-rickshaw passenger, identified as Rofiqul Islam (27) of Dhubri, Assam, sustained minor injuries and was shifted Nongpoh Civil Hospital for treatment.
Police confirmed that the truck driver, who escaped unhurt, was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Both vehicles have been seized and kept at the service lane in Nongpoh for further investigation.
The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination at Nongpoh Civil Hospital, and an inquest has been conducted.
Another biker dead
A head-on collision between a motorbike and a bus on Saturday morning at Bangalkata, West Garo Hills, has led to the death of one woman who was pillion riding.
The incident took place at around 7:30 AM.
According to police, Tomen Ch Marak and his wife Roballine M Marak of Kama Mronggre were travelling in an Apache motorcycle with registration number AS18L-0618 when it collided with the public bus (AS17B-5377). Both the victims were immediately rushed to Phulbari CHC. However, the pillion rider-Robaline M Marak succumbed to her injuries.
