NONGPOH, Oct 19: The Syiem of Raid Marngar, Pa’iem Richard Syiem, on Sunday issued a directive prohibiting all residents of Raid Marngar, traders, market-goers of Iewmawlong, and the general public from bringing fresh betel nuts and Sohphlang (Flemingia vestita) from outside areas into any village within the Raid during the ongoing paddy harvesting season.
According to the Syiem, the prohibition is based on traditional beliefs and customs that have been observed and passed down for generations. It is strongly believed that violating this customary order could bring misfortune and destruction to agricultural produce, particularly paddy, during this crucial harvest period when farmers are actively cutting and collecting their crops.
“This restriction on bringing fresh betel nuts and Sohphlang into the Raid is a deeply rooted customary practice handed down by our forefathers. It has been observed for centuries to protect our crops from natural calamities such as storms and hailstones. Whenever anyone violates this practice, it is believed that ‘eriong (hailstorms) and phria (hailstones) often strike, causing serious damage to the harvest,” stated Pa’iem Richard Syiem.
As the custodian of traditional beliefs and customs, the Syiem emphasiSed that the order is binding on all residents of Raid Marngar, including visitors and traders, until the paddy harvesting season is officially over. He also warned that anyone found violating the order will face penalties in accordance with the customary laws of Raid Marngar.
