Abhay Singh advances in US Open squash
New Delhi, Oct 20: Multiple-time Asian Games medallist Abhay Singh advanced to the round-of-16 at the US Open, a prestigious USD 226,000 PSA Platinum squash event in Philadelphia, while compatriot Ramit Tandon lost his opening match. The 27-year-old Abhay, ranked 30th in the world, edged out Egyptian world number 31 Mohamed ElSherbini 11-8, 4-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-5 in a 62-minute thriller on Sunday, and will next meet Welsh third seed Joel Makin. Tandon lost to Kiwi world number 3 Paul Coll 5-11, 9-11, 7-11. (PTI)
Madaiah wins thrice in inaugural FMSCI Hill Climb Nationals
Bangalore, Oct 20: Vinay S Madaiah of Trackmeisters Team won three classes in the Race to the Clouds event, the first round of the MSAK FMSCI Indian National Hill Climb Championship 2025 (INHCC). Bengaluru-born Vinay, in a Honda City Vtec, topped the premier 1151-1650cc Pro-stock petrol class to set the overall pace, clocking two minutes and 03.804seonds to emerge as the fastest driver of the meet on the 2.5km track on Mallappa Konda, 13km from Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh. Promoted and organised by Motor Sport Club of Karnataka with backing from VM Motorsports Foundation, the Hill Climb discipline got the National status only this year, and it saw 31 entries across all classes but the competition was fierce. Vinay’s precision run on the winding course got him two more victories in the Indian Open and INRC Rally cars classes to make it a historic triple in the first FMSCI Hill Climb Nationals round. (PTI)
4 Indian Greco Roman wrestlers lose opening round at U-23 Worlds
Novi Sad (Serbia), Oct 20: India’s Greco Roman wrestlers could not win even a single bout on the opening day of the U-23 World Championship as all four in action suffered defeats in the opening round, here on Monday. Gaurav (63kg), Ankit (77kg), Rohit Bura (87kg) and Joginder Rathee (130kg) represented India’s challenge and lost their respective bouts in an abject manner. Gaurav was up against Kyrgyzstan’s Kuttubek A Abdurazakov and lost his 1/8 round bout by technical superiority. Ankit suffered similar fate against Serbia’s Zalan Pek. Rohit fell 0-9 in his Qualification round against Amercia’s Payton J Jacobson while Joginder lost his Qualification bout by fall against Uzbekistan’s Damirkhon Rakhmatov. Their progress will now depend on the progress of their vanquishers. On Tuesday, competition will be held in 55kg, 67kg, 72kg and 97kg categories. (PTI)
West Indies add Akeal Hosein to ODI squad for Bangladesh series
Dhaka, Oct 20: West Indies have strengthened their spin attack by adding left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein to their squad for the ongoing three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. Hosein will join the team ahead of the second ODI, as the visitors look to bounce back after a 74-run defeat in the series opener. His inclusion is expected to bolster the bowling unit as West Indies aim to level the series against the hosts. Meanwhile, fast bowlers Jediah Blades and Shamar Joseph, who were part of the initial ODI squad, will return to the Caribbean. Veteran all-rounder Jason Holder is expected to join the squad on October 21, ahead of the T20I leg of the tour. (IANS)
