SHILLONG, Oct 20: Shillong glowed with the festive spirit of Diwali on its opening day, as Hindu families across the capital observed Kali Puja and the business community hosted elaborate Lakshmi Puja ceremonies, even as fireworks and deep-hued lights transformed the night sky into a shimmering panorama.
In markets and homes early in the evening, clay lamps flickered in doorways and windows, and puja platforms thronged with devotees. Later, groups of revelers took to bursting crackers well past midnight, the booming sounds and crackling lights echoing through neighbourhood lanes. Meanwhile, constant patrolling by the city police helped maintain a safe atmosphere even amid the frenzied celebrations.
What stood out, locals say, was the sense of shared celebration. Across community lines — Christians, Hindus and others — there was visible exchange of Diwali greetings and warm hand-shakes.
On social media, the festive mood was equally vivid. One Instagram user posted: “Lights high, spirits higher – the Diwali party in Shillong is where the glow meets the groove.” Another from the city posted: “Diwali Feast — let the festivities begin! Sweets, lights and happy vibes.”
At the same time, some users also reflected on the late-night cracker bursts. A comment read: “Beautiful lights but the sound … definitely past midnight. Hope tomorrow the peace returns.” While joy was the dominant tone, there were subtle undertones of caution regarding noise and late-hour celebrations.
Community online groups noted how the business districts were especially vibrant: shop-fronts decorated with strings of fairy lights and rangoli designs on sidewalks drew appreciative comments. “Shillong’s already glowing with festive vibes,” wrote one Facebook post about the city’s sweets and snacks scene.
Security was maintained through the evening into the early hours as police patrols visited various localities, keeping an eye on large gatherings and fire-cracker hotspots. Residents commented appreciatively: “Police on foot-patrols made us feel secure letting the kids enjoy safely.”
