SHILLONG, Oct 21: In a major operation, the East Khasi Hills district police destroyed around 10 tonnes of cannabis (ganja) plantations spread across nearly five hectares of land at Laitlulong, Sohiong, on Tuesday.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with the district administration, Forest Department, Excise Department, and the state Anti-Narcotics Task Force, was aimed at eradicating the cultivation of cannabis in the area.
According to the police, teams uprooted every ganja plant found within the 5-hectare area.
Later, the plants were destroyed on-site through controlled burning under strict supervision, ensuring complete elimination as per the prescribed legal and environmental protocols.
Officials involved in the drive described the exercise as a strong message against the cultivation and trade of narcotic substances.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the success of the operation underscored the district’s zero tolerance policy towards drug-related crimes and reaffirmed the administration’s determination to safeguard communities from the threat posed by narcotics.
Authorities warned that the cultivation of cannabis is a punishable offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and that, legal action will be taken against anyone found engaging in such illegal activities.
The operation marks another step in the ongoing campaign to curb the spread of drug cultivation and trafficking in rural Meghalaya.
