Abhay Singh loses to world No 4 Makin in US Open squash

Philadelphia, Oct 21: Leading India squash player Abhay Singh went down against Welsh third seed Joel Makin in the round-of-16 at the US Open squash, a $226,000 PSA Platinum event here. The 27-year-old multiple Asian Games medallist and world No 30 lost 2-11, 5-11, 4-11 to the world No 4 on Monday. Abhay had beaten world no 5 Karim Gawad in Doha last month. (PTI)

Vishvajit More in quarters, three other wrestlers lose at U-23 Worlds

Novi Sad (Serbia), Oct 21: Vishvajit More brought cheers to the Indian camp by reaching the quarterfinals but three of his compatriots lost their respective first-round contests in the Greco-Roman competition at the U23 World Championship, here Tuesday. More began with a 6-2 win over Denis Florin Mihai from Kyrgyzstan and followed that up with a commanding technical superiority (9-1) win over American Kenneth Andrew Crosby to reach the quarterfinals. However, Nishant (67kg), Anil (72kg) and Naman (97kg) suffered first-round defeats. Nishant lost 3-8 to Ajerbaijan’s Faraim Mustafayev while Anil was outplayed 1-6 by Aremenia’s Gaspar Terteryan. Naman lost his qualification bout by technical superiority to Armenia’s Arshak Geghamyan. Gaurav (63kg), Ankit (77kg), Rohit Bura (87kg) and Joginder Rathee (130kg) also made a first-round exit in Greco-Roman style competition after losing their opening rounds on Monday. (PTI)

First batch of Indian athletics team arrives in Ranchi for SAAF C’ships

Ranchi, Oct 21: The first batch of the Indian athletics contingent has arrived here on Tuesday morning as the city gears up to host the South Asian Senior Championships (SAAF) 2025 from October 24 to October 26 at the iconic Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Morabadi. Sprinters Pranav Gurav, Uttam Patil, and Arnav Takalkar along with their coach were the first to arrive, marking the beginning of preparations for a strong Indian campaign at the three-day continental event. The remaining members of the 92-strong Indian contingent are expected to arrive later Tuesday, alongside the Nepal team. (PTI)

India’s 23-member boxing squad departs for Asian Youth Games

Bahrain, Oct 21: A 23-member Indian boxing contingent has departed for Manama, Bahrain, to compete in the third Asian Youth Games beginning on October 23. The squad includes standout names such as Dhruv Kharb, Udham Singh Raghav, Khushi Chand, Ahaana Sharma and Chandrika Bhoreshi Pujari, all national gold medallists who have been at the forefront of India’s recent youth boxing success. The team also features several boxers who impressed at the Asian U-17 Championships in July 2025, where India won 43 medals to finish second overall. The contingent will compete across 14 weight categories – seven each for boys and girls – in the U-17 age group. (PTI)
