SHILLONG, Oct 24: The Khasi Students’ Union has slammed the state government over its inordinate delay in implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) in letter and spirit.
KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar on Friday questioned the government over its inability to implement the MRSSA.
“Why is the government taking so long to implement the MRSSA in letter and spirit,” Marngar questioned.
He pointed out that the delay only indicates that the government is not interested in implementing any mechanism to tackle influx.
The Meghalaya government introduced the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, in 2023 with the purpose of ensuring and enhancing security of citizens by making careful and thorough examination of tenants residing in the state.
The Act is supposed to prevent anti-social elements from gaining shelter in the state while creating a control mechanism to check illegal infiltration or entry of illegal migrants who might be residing in different localities.
In order to implement the Act, the government in collaboration with NIC, Meghalaya had launched an online application some years ago to enable the citizens (landlords/tenants) to register themselves with prior verification from local authorities.
Under the pilot project, all landlords/tenants residing in the seven localities of Nongrim Hills, Pohkseh, Nongrah, Nongmensong, Lapalang, Riat Laban, and Wahdienglieng were to mandatorily register themselves in the app.
