College student’s body recovered from Wahrew river

SHILLONG, Oct 24: The body of 21-year-old Ricky Thangkhiew, a student of Synod College, Shillong, was recovered on Friday from the Wahrew river, bringing a tragic end to an intense overnight search operation.
Police, assisted by the Search and Rescue Team of the Fire and Emergency Services, retrieved the body a day after Ricky was reported missing.
He had reportedly slipped into the river on Thursday afternoon while trying to take photographs near the water.
Eyewitnesses told police that Ricky lost his footing and was pulled away by the strong current despite desperate attempts by his friends to save him.
As per reports the deceased had gone on a picnic with his classmates when the accident occurred.
Police have registered a case and an inquiry is under way.
