SHILLONG, Oct 25: Reiterating its unwavering opposition to uranium mining in Meghalaya, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District Unit has announced that it will observe Anti-Uranium Day on October 28 at Domiasiat, coinciding with the fifth death anniversary of renowned anti-uranium crusader Spility Lyngdoh Langrin.
The Union said its stand remains firm that under no circumstance will it permit uranium mining or any pre-mining activities in Domiasiat and Mawthabah, whether undertaken by the state government or any central agency.
The KSU maintained that the people of the region have consistently rejected all attempts to extract uranium from the area.
The organisation said the annual observance of Anti-Uranium Day, which began in 2021, serves both as a tribute to Spility Langrin and as a reaffirmation of the people’s commitment to protect their land from uranium exploration.
The Union recalled that Langrin led the resistance movement since the early 1990s and remained steadfast in her opposition until her death on October 28, 2020.
The KSU described her as a symbol of courage and integrity, noting that she had declined an offer reportedly worth several crores of rupees from the Government of India and the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for permission to mine uranium on her land.
To mark the occasion, the KSU has called upon the public to join the programme at Domiasiat beginning with a gathering at 11:30 am, followed by a floral tribute at the grave of Spility Langrin. The announcement was made through a statement issued by Macdonald Marbaniang, publicity secretary of the KSU South West Khasi Hills District Unit.
