Awareness programme, rally against child abuse held

TURA: The combined NGOs of North Garo Hills comprising of the AAYF, Mendipathar regional Unit, GSU, FAF, Mothers’ Union, Mendipathar Merchant Association, FKJGP and the Auto Association organized an Awareness Programme cum rally at Community Field, Resubelpara on Wednesday in protest against the increasing incidents of child abuse and molestation of women in the region.
It is worth mentioning that just recently a minor girl of 11 years was repeatedly raped by her own uncle at Resu, Nangaburi while another woman from Mendipathar was molested by a CRPF personnel both falling under the district.
While speaking during the awareness programme North Garo Hills SP, J F K Marak spoke briefly on child abuse and law while Sabina Sangma an Advocate from Williamnagar besides speaking on child abuse and law also dwelt on rape and sensitized the youth on the need to organize awareness programmes on the subject.
Following the programme a rally was also taken out from the programme venue via the DC’s Office to Jonglapara Playground in which over 3000 people including students, NGO Leaders, Church leaders, local leaders and various sections of the society participated.
Speaking to The Shillong Times after the programme the President of the AAYF, Mendipathar Regional Unit said, “We are also making an appeal to the concerned departments that if they take initiatives to visit schools, villages and other such places of importance and organizes awareness programmes we are ready to give our full cooperation.”
Earlier, during the awareness programme the meeting was chaired by V J Abraham in the presence of Chairperson, S K Marak, former Chairperson of MSWC.
