SHILLONG, Oct 29: Alongside the formal induction of former Rangsakona MLA Zenith M Sangma into the Congress, who resigned from the All India Trinamool Congress, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday formally welcomed several new members into the party during a ceremony held at Congress Bhavan.
Among those who joined the party was social worker Lionel Nongkhlaw, who had contested the 2025 KHADC elections from Mylliem constituency as an Independent but was unsuccessful.
The formal welcoming ceremony was attended by Dr A Chellakumar, general secretary and AICC in-charge of Meghalaya; Anthony Matthew, joint secretary AICC in-charge of Meghalaya; Vincent H Pala, MPCC president; Saleng A Sangma, Lok Sabha MP from Tura; and several other party leaders.
With Lionel Nongkhlaw’s formal joining, he is now expected to work closely with Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) vice president, Banphiralang Basaïawmoit as part of the Congress team in Mylliem constituency, strengthening the party’s groundwork ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Nongkhlaw said that he has served as a social activist for the past 27 years, and his decision to contest the MDC election was driven by his desire to better serve the people of his constituency.
Although he did not succeed, he believes joining the Congress will provide him a stronger platform to continue working for the welfare of his community.
