TURA, Oct 29: Social activist from South Garo Hills and President of the CRF Greneth M Sangma on Wednesday raised the issue of the shortage of doctors and nurses as well as the lack of proper infrastructure at the Baghmara Civil Hospital.
In his complaint to the South Garo Hills Deputy commissioner, Greneth accused the government of cheating the people and claimed that the situation at the hospital was not as claimed on paper.
“The doctors and nurses are sufficient only on paper, not in reality. A single doctor is expected to handle OPD, sonography, and night duty single-handedly. The deplorable state of the Baghmara Civil Hospital, the only 100-bed hospital in the South Garo Hills district, is appalling. Despite its importance, the hospital is facing severe shortages of doctors, nurses, and infrastructure, compromising the healthcare of approximately 2 lakh residents,” Greneth said.
According to him, the hospital currently has only two diploma holders and seven general medical officers, with a few specialist doctors without medical machines and equipment. The situation, according to Greneth, was made worse with the recent transfer of doctors and nurses from the hospital. According to him, 4 doctors and nurses each, who were stationed at the hospital were recently transferred to Williamnagar and other district headquarters.
“As per the Medical Central Board Criteria, the hospital should have five senior medical officers and ten specialist doctors. However, the current situation is far from meeting these standards. The hospital’s ambulance services are also severely limited as there are only two functional ambulances,” he said.
