GUWAHATI, Oct 31: The Fifth Convocation of The Assam Royal Global
University (RGU) has been held successfully here on Friday in the presence of a galaxy of
eminent dignitaries.
Altogether 1,967 graduates were awarded degrees, out of which 32
scholars were awarded Ph.D. degrees, 777 students were awarded postgraduate and integrated
course degrees, and 1,093 students were awarded undergraduate degrees. Honoris Causa
Degrees were conferred upon four distinguished personalities—Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) to
Dr. Naresh Trehan, Padma Bhushan awardee & Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta;
Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) to Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman, RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group; Doctor
of Literature (D.Litt.) to Padma Shri and Sahitya Akademi Awardee Yeshe Dorjee
Thongchi; Doctor of Law (LL.D.) to Mahesh Agarwal, Eminent Advocate and Managing
Partner, Agarwal Law Associates.
The Convocation was presided over by Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of
Assam and the Visitor of RGU. It was graced by Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, Member of Rajya
Sabha who delivered the Convocation address; Bimal Borah, Minister of Industries &
Commerce of Assam, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Lok Sabha Member, apart from RGU Chancellor Dr AK Pansari, Pro Chancellor AK Modi, Vice Chancellor Prof AK Buragohain, among others.
In absentia, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Education Minister of Assam, conveyed his
congratulatory message to the graduating students.
Soon after the Convocation was declared open by the Chancellor of RGU Dr. A. K. Pansari,
Vice Chancellor of RGU Prof. A. K. Buragohain welcomed the august gathering and
presented the University Report. This was followed by presentation of Honoris Causa
Degrees, presentation of the candidates for the award of degrees and diplomas, administration of pledge, award of Ph.D. Degrees, Medals and Salvers to the graduates.
Congratulating the graduates, Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya said that
education must uphold the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—the world is one
family— by fostering values of unity, empathy, and global citizenship.
“I am glad to see that Royal Global University aligns with the National Education Policy, which emphasizesholistic development, skill enhancement, and value-based learning”, he stated.
Delivering the Convocation Address, Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi remarked that the North East is
an integral part of the rising India. Drawing a symbolic connection, he highlighted that the
very name Arunachal—meaning the land of the rising sun—beautifully reflects this spirit.
Addressing the graduating students, RGU Chancellor Dr A. K. Pansari reiterated his dream of envisioning 50,000 outstanding leaders and entrepreneurs emerging from RGU over the next decade, ready to transform the Northeast and help build Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Emphasising on sustainability and green consciousness, he said that “Planting a Sapling. A Must Today, For Survival Tomorrow” is his green motto.
Chancellor’s gold medals were awarded to Deep Deka, MCA and Tanmayee Devchoudhury,
BA English. Five Silvers: Prof Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri Best Science Graduate Award went to
Bhaswati Goswami, MSc Botany; Sanwarmal Modi Award for Excellence in Cultural
Activities went to Akhit Nayan Gogoi, B Pharma; Gini Devi Pansari Award for Excellence in
Literary Activities went to Dhiman Chakraborty, B.Sc. Geology; Basudeo Pansari Award forExcellence in Community Service went to Sagar Kumar Nag, BA Administrative Service;
and Suresh Kumar Prithani Award for Excellence in Mentoring went to Bidisha Kashyap, BA
Political science. Apart from this, 56 gold medals and 58 silver medals were presented to
successful students from various departments of the university.
The Honorary Doctor of Science Degree was conferred upon Dr Naresh Trehan for his
pioneering contributions to cardiac science and service to healthcare. Sanjiv Goenka
received Honorary Doctor of Letters for his contribution to education, nation-building and
public welfare. Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi was conferred with Honorary Doctor of Literature
in recognition of his lifetime devotion to literature enriching the region’s literary heritage
while Honorary Doctor of Law was awarded to Mahesh Agarwal for his dedication to
advancement of justice and the public good.
Earlier, the Convocation began with the grand and elegant Academic Procession, which was
participated by the Registrar of the University, Academic Council members, members of
Board of Governors, Deans of different schools, Heads of different Departments, and the
Award recipients. The Convocation ended with the signing of the National Anthem.
