Creativity takes centre stage at city exhibition
SHILLONG, Nov 1: BK Bajoria School organised a three-day multi-disciplinary exhibition ‘EXPLORA: INTERWOVEN INTELLECT’ from October 29-31, during which students demonstrated creativity, innovation and scientific temper. Organised as part of the school’s golden jubilee celebrations, the event was inaugurated by the school chairman, Sunil Bajoria. Students, teachers, and principals from various schools participated in the exhibition, which featured a wide array of displays and working models. Participants presented experiments and informative projects reflecting their understanding of real-world applications. Fashion exhibits brought colour and flair to the event, while displays on environmental conservation and digital innovation attracted special attention. Meanwhile, parents and visitors expressed appreciation for the students’ confidence and clarity in presenting their projects. On the other hand, school principal, Vandana Gupta, congratulated the participants and faculty for their dedication, stating that such initiatives help nurture critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills among learners.
Council seeks support for colleges, faculty pay parity
SHILLONG, Nov 1: The Meghalaya College Principals’ Council (MCPC) has urged the state government to extend continued financial support to deficit colleges, grant UGC pay scales to faculty members of government-aided and ad hoc colleges, and assist institutions in launching vocational training courses. A delegation led by MCPC President Dr. Eureka FP Lyngdoh met Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in the presence of Education department Adviser HM Shangpliang to discuss the challenges confronting higher education institutions in Meghalaya. The council also sought the government’s intervention in resolving issues related to higher secondary sections in colleges and other concerns impacting the sector. Meanwhile, the chief minister assured the delegation that the matters raised would be thoroughly examined and appropriate measures taken to strengthen higher education in the state. Later, the MCPC office-bearers met Education Minister Lakmen Rymbui and apprised him of the same issues.
116 WJH villagers benefit from general health camp
SHILLONG, Nov 1: A total of 116 people benefitted from a general health camp, organised by the Department of Social Work (PG and UG) of St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, at Lumshyrmit, Mihmyntdu, in West Jaintia Hills district. According to a statement here, the camp was organised on Friday in collaboration with the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE), Nangbah PHC, District Mental Health Programme (Jowai), Civil Hospital (Ialong), the office of the DM&HO, Jowai, and Mission Nethralaya Eye Care Centre, Shillong. During the health camp, residents availed a range of healthcare services including general medical check-ups, oral cancer screening, blood pressure and sugar monitoring, eye examinations, blood and HIV testing, and mental health counselling. The programme also featured awareness sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and lifestyle-related diseases. Individuals needing further medical attention were referred to nearby healthcare facilities. “The initiative aimed to promote preventive healthcare and enhance community well-being by bringing essential health services closer to rural populations. Organisers underscored the importance of accessible and integrated healthcare, particularly for underserved communities, and commended the collaborative effort among medical institutions and the college,” the statement said.
Seminar highlights Northeast’s role in India’s development
SHILLONG, Nov 1: A two-day national seminar on ‘Viksit Bharat @2047: The Role of Northeast India in India’s Development Trajectory’ concluded successfully at William Carey University, Meghalaya, on Friday. The seminar was organised by the university in collaboration with the Indian Political Science Association (IPSA) and supported by the Chief Minister’s Fund, Meghalaya, and the North Eastern Council (NEC). MLA and chairman of the Meghalaya Khadi & Village Industries Board (MKVIB) Subir Marak attended the event as the chief guest while the valedictory address was delivered by Prof. J. Doungel, Executive Member of IPSA. “The seminar served as a platform for academicians, scholars and policymakers to deliberate on strategies for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and regional integration as India moves toward its centenary of independence,” the statement said.
