TURA, Nov 3: The AHAM from Adokgre in North Garo Hills has written to the North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner seeking his immediate intervention in rectifying the undue delay and administrative discrepancies in the verification of students’ applications under the Umbrella Scholarship Scheme in the district.
“It has come to our notice that the process of verification of students’ scholarship applications in North Garo Hills District takes an unusually long period of time, often ranging from two to three months, whereas in other districts like East Khasi Hills, the verification process is completed within one to two days only. This wide variation clearly reflects administrative discrepancies and causes undue discrimination among students of different districts within the same State,” it said, in its complaint issued on Monday.
The organisation pointed out that due to the prolonged delay, many students are unable to receive their scholarship on time, thereby facing immense hardships in paying academic fees, accommodation, and other essential educational expenses.
Such delays defeat the very objective of the Umbrella Scheme for Education of Scheduled Tribe Children, which was instituted to provide timely financial assistance to students from weaker economic backgrounds, it added.
Reminding that such disparity in the administrative process violates the fundamental principles of equality and equal opportunity guaranteed under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India, the organization urge the official to look into the matter and direct the officials concerned to speed up the verification process, ensure uniformity and parity in the verification timeline across all districts, appoint a nodal officer to oversee the verification process etc.
