SHILLONG, Nov 3: Assamese legendary singer Zubeen Garg’s final movie Roi Roi Binale is drawing massive crowds across multiplexes and cinema halls in Shillong. From Anjalee Cinema to Bijou Cinema, every show has been going houseful as people from all walks of life flock to watch the legendary musician’s last cinematic creation.
Roi Roi Binale is a soul-stirring Assamese musical that weaves together themes of love, art, identity, and the lingering shadows of a region scarred by past turmoil. The film has struck a deep chord with audiences of all ages.
The movie hit the screens in Shillong last Friday, and since then, most shows have been running to packed houses.
Dr Bhaskar Borgohain, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at NEIGRIHMS and a longtime friend of the late Zubeen Garg, told The Shillong Times that he had wanted to watch the movie on its opening day but could not get a ticket as all shows were sold out. “So, I watched the movie on Saturday here in Shillong,” he said.
Calling Roi Roi Binale a masterpiece and one of Zubeen’s finest creations, Dr Borgohain said the film stands out for its use of technology and strong emotional depth. He also praised sound designer Amrit Pritam, who has worked on major Bollywood blockbusters.
“This was a perfect tribute to Zubeen,” he said, adding that the performances and dialogues would “stay in your heart for a long time.”
Dr Borgohain also expressed hope that the film would reach a wider audience, suggesting that subtitles in different languages be added to help people from diverse backgrounds connect with it.
Across Shillong, Roi Roi Binale has become a cinematic phenomenon. Many viewers were seen cheering, clapping, and even tearing up during the screenings, shouting slogans of “Jai Zubeen Da!” as they celebrated the artist’s legacy.
Gaurav Debnath, manager of Anjalee Cinema, said the response has been “phenomenal” despite minimal promotion.
“All shows are going houseful, and some people are even watching the movie twice in a day,” he said, adding that it now depends on the producer how long they want to continue the screening.
Anjalee Cinema, which is witnessing heavy demand, is currently running five shows a day. “People are crying, cheering, and completely immersed in the film. It’s a deeply emotional experience for them,” Debnath added.
At Bijou Cinema, the excitement was equally palpable. Some moviegoers arrived hours before the screening — one woman said she had reached the hall at 3 pm for a 5:30 pm show. Even the balconies were packed, and the audience erupted in cheers as soon as the movie began.
“We love our Zubeen Da, and that’s why we came here to watch him,” said a woman who attended the show with her family.
Another viewer at Anjalee Cinema said she was “speechless” after watching the film.
