SHILLONG, Nov 3: The UDP, one of the major regional parties of the state and the biggest ally of the NPP in the MDA 2.0 Government, seems to be unaware of any move to form a new political front in Northeast India.
Asked about the development, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the party had not received any information in this regard.
“I am not aware of any move to create a new political front. However, the UDP is open to anything that serves the interest and welfare of the people of the state, especially as a regional force,” Lyngdoh told reporters here on Monday.
He emphasised that the UDP’s core focus is safeguarding the interests of the indigenous communities of Meghalaya.
“We have to look after the interests of the local indigenous tribes whether Khasis, Jaintias, or Garos,” he added. UDP leader and Cabinet Minister Lahkmen Rymbui also denied any knowledge about the proposed political front.
“If such a front is formed, we will have to see what its idea and objectives are, and what issues it plans to take up,” he said.
Rymbui also reiterated that the UDP’s main priority is the protection of the rights and welfare of the people of Meghalaya.
“Our concern is to ensure that the state develops and that the interests of the indigenous people are safeguarded,” he said, adding that it would be premature to comment on the proposed alliance without clarity on its ideology and programme.
