SHILLONG, Nov 4: At a time when groups such as the Syngkhong Rympei Thymmai and a section of politicians are advocating for the adoption of the father’s surname, the Seng Khasi Kmie (SKM) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to uphold the traditional “khein kur khein kha” (reckoning of maternal and paternal clan) system, which forms one of the foundational principles of the organisation.
Speaking to reporters, SKM assistant general secretary Paia B Synrem said since its inception, the Seng Khasi has maintained a clear and firm stance on the importance of preserving the lineage system that defines the Khasi community.
“The lineage of the Khasi tribe descends through the mother, as our society is matrilineal. We continue to uphold and preserve this heritage,” Synrem stated.
He reiterated that this tradition cannot and should not be altered, as it represents the core identity of the Khasi people. “We will always stand firm in preserving the customs and traditions that form the foundation of the Khasi community and are among the guiding principles of the Seng Khasi,” Synrem added. He declined to comment on the views of those advocating change, saying, “I cannot respond to the feelings of others but as a community, we have a duty to preserve our lineage system.”
Echoing similar sentiments, SKM vice president Dipshon L Nongbri expressed concern that within the Khasi community itself, there are emerging schools of thought seeking to question or alter this long-standing system.
“It is indeed unfortunate that some within our own community are attempting to challenge what has always been our way of life,” Nongbri said, pointing out that every community has its own unique identity and practices. In this regard, he referred to communities with distinct dietary customs.
SKM cultural secretary Hammarsing L Kharhmar highlighted that the uniqueness of the Khasi indigenous tribe lies in the practice of “khein kur khein kha,” describing it as a defining aspect of their cultural identity.
“If anyone tries to distort or dismantle this, it would mean undermining a vital part of who we are,” Kharhmar remarked.
The Khasi matrilineal system traces lineage through the mother and maternal ancestors, with all members of the clan descending from a common ancestral mother – a tradition that continues to shape the social and cultural fabric of Khasi society.
