SHILLONG: The KSU has urged upon the State Government to resolve the problem of power crisis in the State at the earliest.
“The present crisis is mainly due to the lack of vision on the part of the State Government. We would not have faced this crisis if the Government had a backup plan,” KSU president Daniel Khyriem said here on Friday.
He also said that load shedding is not a solution to solve the present crisis while adding that load shedding is causing a lot of inconvenience to the general public.
“The Government needs to clear the pending dues the various Central Generating Stations such as NEEPCO, NHPC and NTPC to be able to avail power from these agenices. We have informed that the various CGS are not releasing power due to the failure of the Government to clear the pending dues,” KSU president said.
He also said that the Government would have to come with a long term plan to improve the power scenario in the State.
“We cannot make huge investment on any power project which fails to improve the power generation,” Khyriem said.
When informed that there is a view that uranium is the only alternative to generate power, the KSU president said that the union’s stand on the issue of uranium is the same. “We will continue to oppose any proposal to mine uranium in the State,” he added.
Meanwhile, KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum urged the common people of the State to come out to protest and sought for an explanation from the Government and MeECL on the present power crisis.
“The people will no longer remain a silent spectator. The Government is answerable,” Nongrum said.
He also questioned the State Government for investing huge funds on Myntdu-Leshka Hydel Electric Project (MLHEP) which failed to yield any positive result.
“Instead of contributing to improve the power scenario, this MLHEP has become an eyesore,” the KHNAM working president said.
