SHILLONG: To nurture talented youths, the union government has proposed to set up district level sports schools (DLSS) in every district in the country including in Meghalaya.
GSG Ayyangar, Joint Secretary (Development), Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, while addressing the North Eastern Regional Workshop on implementation of Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) and review meeting on Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) organized by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said that these schools will be set up on PPP mode except in remote and disturbed areas, where the existing Navodaya schools are proposed to be upgraded if new institutions are not possible to be set up.
“However, if Navodaya schools do not exist or cannot become DLSS, the funding will be done from the existing schemes of the government,” Ayyangar said while informing that the investment proposed for each school is estimated at Rs. 28 -30 crore.
Ayyangar also informed that the administrative control of these schools will be vested with the Ministry Human Resource Development (MHRD) while the Ministry of Sports will supervise the training in sports and provide sports scholarships and the recurring expenses.
