GUWAHATI, Nov. 11: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged stern and decisive action against a section of people “glorifying the Delhi blast” on social media.

Speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday, Sarma condemned the blast at the national capital, while expressing concern over a section of people “either welcoming the attack or posting emojis in excitement on social media”.

“We have since yesterday been observing social media posts where some people are directly or indirectly expressing their support for terrorism. We are checking their backgrounds, and if they are found guilty, tough action will be taken against them,” the chief minister asserted.

Sarma said no form of terror would be allowed to take place in the state. ‘If necessary, arrests would be made as no form of terrorism or support for such attacks can be allowed to take place in Assam,” he said.

He further said that the DGP has been directed to ascertain the backgrounds of such people and arrest anyone sympathising or supporting terrorism, if they are found to be from Assam.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has expressed shock and pain at the incident, while calling for stern action against the perpetrators of the attack in which innocent civilians have been killed and grievously injured.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gogoi said: “First Pahalgam and now Delhi.  It is shocking and deeply painful to see Indian civilians succumbing to terror in 2025. As public servants our first duty is to keep our citizens safe. My heart goes out to the victims of these terror attacks and I pray for the well-being of those injured.”

“At this time the perpetrators and the facts behind this tragedy must be pursued ruthlessly. We cannot avoid introspection and accountability. India must remain united and strong at this moment,” he stated.

Security and surveillance, meanwhile, has been beefed up in public places across the state following the blast that killed at least eight people and left several injured on Monday evening.

In Guwahati, sniffer dogs were used by police personnel at the railway station and luggage of passengers were thoroughly checked as a precautionary measure.
