TURA: A United A’chik Liberation Army leader accused of being involved in the killing of seven people during the Durga Puja celebrations in 2013 on the eve of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections was nabbed by the police in the outskirts of Guwahati on Sunday evening.

The arrested UALA military commander of UALA for North Garo Hills region, has been identified as Tonsing Sangma. He was reportedly travelling to Guwahati for medical treatment when the Assam police intercepted his vehicle at Basistha, near Beltola. A group of militants, including a woman overground worker, were arrested along with him.

Goalpara Police have taken him into custody over his alleged involvement in the killing of seven Rabha civilians in the district.

Armed UALA militants had attacked a party of revelers during the late hours, opening indiscriminate fire, leading to the deaths of the seven people.

The prelude to the autonomous council election had witnessed a series of clashes between Rabhas and Garos in Goalpara district and parts of Kamrup in Assam and the adjoining areas of the Garo Hills in Meghalaya, leading to the exodus of civilian population.

The UALA headed by former ANVC-B action commander Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin has been involved in a string of attacks on rival groups and civilians. The group is prime accused in the killing of two prison officials during a daring attack on Williamnagar district jail, in February 2013.
