Guwahati: A 100-year-old house of former President late Fakruddin Ali Ahmed at Lakhtokia area of Assam’s main city Guwahati, was gutted in a devastating fire, along with several other nearby houses, in the wee hours on Sunday.

The blaze, suspected to have started from a small house in the compound behind Ahmed’s house spread quickly, engulfing several houses in the compound and spreading to nearby premises.

The dry weather led to quick spread of the blaze even as several fire tenders rushed to the spot immediately, but failed to douse the flames.

The fire was brought under control after much damage was already done. The 100-year-old house of Ahmed was entirely gutted in the inferno.

City SSP AP Tiwari, who visited the spot, said preliminary investigation showed that it was an accidental fire, but a thorough probe has been ordered.

Relief for the affected families has been provided, he added. No one was injured in the blaze. (UNI)
