Assam Cabinet approves Rs 3217 cr for road project

Guwahati, Nov. 14: The Assam Cabinet has taken key decisions to boost road connectivity across 34 districts, transform the state into a sporting powerhouse and formulate a policy to protect riverbanks.

Addressing mediapersons after chairing the Cabinet meeting on Thursday evening, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Cabinet has approved the implementation of Asom Mala 3.0 with an outlay of 3,217 crore to develop a high-speed transport corridor, covering 883 kilometres of roads

“The state Cabinet also accorded administrative approval of Rs 765 crore for redevelopment of RG Baruah Sports Complex here into a world-class multi-sport facility to meet the growing demand for improved sports infrastructure, and to nurture the sporting potential of the youth of Assam,” Sarma said.

The key objectives of the redevelopment project are to create a FIFA Category 2 stadium football stadium with a seating capacity of 25,000 spectators; to establish a multi-sports training and competition facility to promote sports excellence in Assam and to enhance the sports ecosystem by providing infrastructure for football, swimming, badminton, table tennis and other indoor and outdoor games.

“The state Cabinet also approved the policy for execution of riverbank protection and embankment projects based on voluntary land relinquishment by the local community, abolition of formal land acquisition requirements,” the chief minister said.

As one of the provisions of the policy, new embankment and riverbank protection projects shall be considered for approval only when the required land is voluntarily made available by the local community and the land relinquishment process is completed and the process of land relinquishment by the local community shall strictly conform to the provisions of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886 and the rules there under.
