ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s army says a roadside bomb has killed three soldiers in a tribal region near the Afghan border. An army statement says the incident took place on Sunday night on the boundary of South and North Waziristan tribal areas.
No one claimed responsibility for the explosion but suspicion is likely to fall on a mix of local and foreign al-Qaida-linked militants who have safe havens in the lawless regions.
Pakistan has been fighting against the militancy there for years. The Taliban have killed thousands of Pakistanis in their bid to overthrow the government and install their own harsh brand of Islamic Shariah law.
The militants have recently called off a 40-day ceasefire they declared on March 1 amid Pakistan’s efforts to negotiate a peace deal. (Agencies)
