SHILLONG, Nov 17: The GHADC will go to elections in a few months, and while the NPP and the Congress are seen as the main contenders, the NPP has claimed that the Congress’ attempt to create a momentum for itself has “fallen flat” after the party’s performance in the Bihar elections.
NPP working president and Cabinet Minister Marcuise Marak on Monday said that although the GHADC polls will not be a “cakewalk” for the party—as every election brings its own challenges—the Congress’ earlier attempts to build a wave have diminished following its debacle in Bihar.
Admitting that there will be anti-incumbency sentiments against the NPP in the District Councils, Marak said the government has taken several steps to resolve issues that had previously hampered the functioning of the GHADC.
“Everything is resolved in the GHADC, and even employees recently met the Chief Minister to express their gratitude for the release of their salaries,” he said.
He also informed that the party has not yet decided whether it will contest alone or enter into an alliance with its partners for the polls.
Responding to allegations that the NPP distributes money to voters during elections, Marak termed them as mere political accusations, adding that such practices existed even during the Congress regime.
“Our approach is simple—we believe in leadership, performance, and policy,” he said, adding that the party is expected to finalise its list of candidates for the GHADC polls by the second week of December.
Earlier, the last date for submitting applications for party tickets was November 14, but following requests, the deadline was extended to November 30.
