TURA, Nov 17: Former MLA John Leslee K. Sangma has come down heavily on the state government for allegedly violating the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, during the Cherry Blossom Festival, which took place at JN Stadium in the city.
“I have been residing in Mawlai Mawroh for the last 10 years and just like any other resident of the area had to give up my tranquility to what seemed to be an attempt by the Government of Meghalaya to boost tourism in the state. For the locals who lived close to the venue, the two-day Cherry Blossom Festival concert turned into two nights of torture. The total disregard to public peace and fundamental rights of the citizens, and the rights of the patients at Ganesh Das Hospital by the government has been exposed,” the former South Tura MLA said.
Sangma said that he would be seeking accountability from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board by submitting a formal complaint to see that justice is done to the citizens and to ensure that such violation of their rights is not repeated. Marak also demanded an apology from the Chief Minister and the Tourism Minister towards the affected people.
