GUWAHATI, Nov. 18: Special investigation team (SIT) chief Munna Prasad Gupta on Tuesday said Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been invoked in Zubeen Garg’s death case following the Union home minister’s grant of sanction under BNSS to proceed against the accused linked to the legendary singer’s death in Singapore two months ago.
Under Section 208 of BNSS, if a crime is committed outside India, the case can be taken up by the court only after the central government gives prior sanction.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Gupta said Section 208 mandates prior approval from the Government of India for courts to take cognisance of offences committed outside India.
“The central government’s grant of sanction to proceed against the accused in the case will play a crucial role in enabling the filing of a comprehensive chargesheet before the court,” the SIT head said.
It may be noted that the special investigation team was constituted to probe the death of Garg in Singapore on September 19 and submit a chargesheet within a stipulated time frame.
Upon his return from London, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated on Tuesday that the state government is committed to file the chargesheet against the accused persons in the case within December 10, 2025.
