SHILLONG, Nov 19: After more than 17 years of wait, the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase III has finally reached the commissioning and testing stage, marking a major milestone for the long-delayed project that was sanctioned in 2008.
On Wednesday, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak announced that the government has successfully commissioned and tested stage one of the project. He said work has now moved to stage two, where water is being pumped from the present site to the treatment plant at Mawphlang.
“We are standing here today after 17 years. The project was sanctioned in 2008 and today, in 2025, in the month of November, we are commissioning and testing the project here,” the minister said, highlighting the long and challenging journey of the water supply scheme.
Marak expressed gratitude to the officials involved, saying, “For this successful commissioning and testing I would like to thank the entire team of officials.”
With the latest commissioning and testing, the state will now be able to add another 8 million litres of water per day to the GSWSS to improve supply for Shillong city.
