JOWAI, Nov 20: The Winter Session of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), which began and concluded on Thursday Saw discussions focused on the welfare and improvement of the Council through various motions raised by opposition MDCs, including MB Rymbai, AA Shullai (Leader of Opposition), Jamshaphrang Pohtam, and Nehemaia Lamare.
The session was chaired by JHADC Chairman, Dr Sankey Shangpung.
During the proceedings, the MDC of War Central, Jamshaphrang Pohtam, expressed dissatisfaction by strongly thumping the table. However, when his turn came to raise questions, he withdrew and did not take part in the questioning.
Two questions were raised by M Rymbai. The first pertained to the number of Gazetted Officer posts in the Finance department of the JHADC. In response, the CEM, Thombor Shiwat, informed the House that there are two such posts. The second question concerned the process of contesting the post of Waheh Shnong (Village Head) under the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Establishment of Elaka and Village Election Act, 2015; Appointment, Powers, Functions and Jurisdiction of Dolloi/Sirdar and Waheh Shnong) Act, 2015. The CEM clarified that, as per JHADC laws, only men are eligible to contest for the post of Waheh Shnong.
Meanwhile, Nehemaia Lamare raised questions regarding the agreement between the Council and Earth Tree for the Agro-Forestry Project, which aims to plant trees on barren hill areas and slopes within Jaintia Hills under the Council’s jurisdiction.
The agreement allows a period of up to 40 years for the trees to grow and mature, with the objective of restoring environmental balance and generating revenue for the Council.
The CEM also informed the House about the appointment of Mihnyngkong Sutnga (MDC) as Chairman of the Boundary Committee and L William Theite (MDC) as Honorary Forest Adviser.
