SHILLONG, Nov 27: The High Court of Meghalaya has ordered status quo to be maintained on the proposed demolition of “Bidhan Bhavan” or “Roy Villa” until the next date of hearing.
Based on a letter addressed to Chief Justice Soumen Sen, the court had, earlier this month, registered a PIL concerning the property, which is presently a State Circuit House. The letter described the property as a heritage structure of significant historical value.
During the hearing on the PIL on Thursday, a short affidavit was filed on behalf of the state government.
The Advocate General submitted that a more detailed affidavit will be filed after examining relevant records with regard to the history and its transition to becoming a State Circuit House.
S. Chakrawarty, Amicus Curiae, submitted that in he would file an affidavit after receipt of the state’s affidavit.
“This matter will be placed before the regular PIL bench of the Chief Justice. Status quo as to the property shall be maintained till the next date,” the Division Bench comprising Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Biswadeep Bhattacharjee said.
