Association launched to boost state’s health, nutrition sector
SHILLONG, Nov 28: The Nutrition and Dietetics Association of Meghalaya (NDAM) was formally launched on Thursday at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), marking a significant step forward for the state’s health and nutrition sector. The newly formed association aims to bring together professionals, policymakers and stakeholders from the fields of health, nutrition and education to promote evidence-based nutrition practices, enhance research and address region-specific dietary challenges. Association vice president, Gracedalyne Shylla Passah, recalled that the initiative began with small CNE and CME sessions held every three months, where dietitians and medical experts discussed clinical nutrition and disease-specific dietary management. Growing concerns over rising malnutrition among critically ill and cancer patients motivated the establishment of a formal body dedicated to continuous learning and community awareness. It may be mentioned that the association plans to work closely with the state government, particularly in early childhood development initiatives such as POSHAN Maah. The association has identified the high rates of stunting and severe acute malnutrition among children in Meghalaya as key areas of concern and intends to collaborate with rural nutritionists and stakeholders to examine root causes and strengthen interventions. While nutrition rehabilitation centres exist in several districts, the association emphasised the need for deeper research, stronger community engagement and coordinated action to address persistent nutritional challenges. Speaking at the programme, Mawlai legislator Brighstarwell Marbaniang highlighted the importance of collective strength within the profession, noting that an association enables members to advocate effectively and engage with the government. He expressed hope that NDAM would grow into a strong institution serving the state’s people and purpose. The event concluded with the official release of the association’s logo.
