SHILLONG: Taking advantage of the load shedding, miscreants reportedly broke into the Umiam Branch of State Bank of India and decamped with Rs. 71 lakh in cash.

As per the information uploaded on the website of Meghalaya Police, the incident happened on May 2 between 1 am and 3 am when unknown miscreants broke into SBI Umiam Branch near Orchid Hotel, Umiam, Ri Bhoi, and stole cash Rs. 71 lakh.

However, there were also unconfirmed reports that the robbers managed to flee with only Rs 1.5 lakh leaving behind Rs. 69.69 lakh, having failed to open the safe where the cash had been stored.

Sources informed that the heist was a well thought out plan as the robbers had come equipped with all the paraphernalia required to carry out the robbery.

Though the robbers destroyed the CCTV inside the bank premises, police said that they have obtained some leads in the case and that the robbers would be nabbed shortly.
