SHILLONG, Nov 30: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has criticised the state government over the alleged humiliation of Khasi women mobile street vendors at Khyndai Lad, calling the incident an example of the government’s “double standards” in dealing with public issues.
Speaking at the 30th anniversary celebration of the KSU Laban Circle, KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar condemned the incident and questioned the government’s approach.
“Just recently we saw music and celebrations at Polo Grounds, and our youth danced happily. A few days later, we saw how our women were in tears at Khyndai Lad,” Marngar said.
He added that the same authorities who entertain the public also end up harassing ordinary citizens.
Marngar said the prevailing challenges and hardships faced by people in the state should compel the youth to remain alert and proactive.
“Many ask why the KSU remains silent, but we have chosen the path of perseverance and endurance,” he said, urging young Khasis not to overlook the pressing issues around them.
He stressed that the suffering and loss of hope among many should motivate the youth to become pillars of strength for the community.
The KSU president raised concerns over the “crippling job scenario” in the state and criticised the delay in implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system.
He accused the Centre of ignoring Meghalaya’s ILP resolution passed on December 19, 2019, while questioning the state’s handling of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act.
Reflecting on the Laban Circle’s journey over the past three decades, Marngar said the organisation has grown through challenges and dedicated service. “Thirty years is not a short time; it has matured the Circle. New challenges will come, but with committed youth carrying the responsibility with humility, the organisation will stand firm,” he said.
North East Students’ Organisation chairman Samuel Jyrwa, who attended the programme as guest of honour, recalled the expansion of KSU units after 1987. “In Laban, the unit was formed in 1994, and the Circle followed in 1995,” he said, acknowledging former leaders who contributed towards strengthening the organisation.
Encouraging meritorious students and awardees, Jyrwa said the community must strive for academic excellence. “Our community is small, and for many years, we have not had successful candidates in the civil services. Those of you with strong academic ability must work hard—not just for yourselves but for the pride of the state and our people,” he remarked.
He also highlighted the need for strong leadership, capable of confronting societal wrongs, urging youth to nurture their talents in sports, arts, music, and other creative fields.
Jyrwa further reminded members of the importance of the community’s “three Ks”— Ktien (language), Khein Kur Khein Kha (clan lineage system), and the Ka Khyndew Ka Shyiap (land) —stressing that these must remain strong for the community’s survival.
Laban Circle president Reuben Najiar echoed similar sentiments, expressing concerns over alleged favouritism in the job recruitment process, where vacancies reportedly remain unadvertised and opportunities favour those with political connections. He assured that the KSU would continue to push for fair opportunities.
During the event, the Circle presented the Maitshaphrang Excellence Award 2025 to meritorious students from Class X to PhD candidates. Sportspersons who brought laurels to the state and former office bearers were felicitated.
