SHILLONG, Dec 3: The National People’s Party (NPP) has stated that the recent shift of leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to the Congress does not pose any threat to the party in the Garo Hills region.
NPP working president and Cabinet Minister Marcuise Marak on Wednesday said the party does not view the developments as a challenge.
He recalled that the NPP had performed strongly in past elections, including defeating Zenith Sangma’s wife, Sadhiarani, in the Gambegre bypoll, and said the party was aware of the situation but did not consider it problematic.
He added that the real picture would emerge during the elections, and he did not believe the current political churn would affect the NPP.
The assertion comes after a high-profile joining programme organised by the Congress in November at Gambegre—its second major consolidation initiative after Rangsakona. During the event, Dengnakpara MDC, Sadhiarani M. Sangma formally left the TMC and joined the Congress along with her supporters, drawing a large crowd and signalling visible shifts on the ground in the constituency represented by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma.
The seat had earlier been vacated by former MLA Saleng A. Sangma after his victory in the Tura Lok Sabha election.
The political realignment follows developments in October, when former Rangsakona MLA and TMC leader Zenith M. Sangma officially rejoined the Congress.
The return of both Zenith and Sadhiarani has energised Congress workers in parts of Garo Hills, though the NPP maintains that these moves will not alter its prospects.
Despite the heightened activity, the NPP continues to project confidence, reiterating that the crossovers do not threaten the party’s standing in the region.
