Forest officials arrest one in Arunachal

Itanagar: Forest officials in Arunachal Pradesh have arrested a person for burning and clearing approximately one hectare of forest land under Drupong Reserve Forest near here for jhumming. A team of officials from Banderdewa forest beat office had arrested one Shamal Kanti Chakma of Hollongi-Kokila villageon Friday, officials said here on Saturday. Chakma has been arrested under Section 25 (d) and (f) of the Assam Forest Regulation Act, 1891, which attracts three years’ imprisonment or a fine of Rs 25000 or both. He has been handed over to the Balijan police station for further investigation, Banderdewa DFO Tasso Sira has informed. The forest department has launched intensive patrolling to check forest fires.(PTI)

Man killed in elephant attack

Agartala: A tribal was killed in an attack by a herd of wild elephants in Tripura’s Khowai district, about 70 km from here, official sources said on Saturday. The 35-year-old man was seiously injured by the elephants when he was collecting firewood in the jungled in Gadaibari village on Thursday, Forest Ranger of Kalyanpur Forest division, Lal Mohan Das told reporters. Villagers and forest department officials immediately rushed him to Khowai hospital, from where he was shifted to Agartala Government Medical College where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Forest department has deployed guards in the area so that the herd, which has also damaged standing ctops, does not sneak into the nearby villages from there. Forest officials said the pachyderms were entering human habitation in search food as their habitats were damaged due to depletion of forests. (PTI)

Cops rescue abducted businessman

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh police rescued a businessman abducted by NDFB (S) militants from his farmhouse at Pasighat in East Siang district after a fierce encounter with the rebel outfit at Bora Jaldobi village in Assam’s Dhemaji district, a top police officer said on Saturday. A police team lead by East Siang SP Devendra Arya rescued 65-year-old Keshav Pandey from the captivity of the militants after about one hour gun battle Friday night and arrested four cadres namely Rajiv Narzary, Suresh Basumatary, Bolin Boro and Tengana Narzary while three others managed to escape, DGP S Nithianandam told a press conference here on Saturday evening. Pandey, who owns a cattle farm near Partung area inside the Daying Ering Wildlife sanctuary was kidnapped on April 29 last around 7 PM after a few miscreants entered his farm disconnecting the power supply.
